Open Book
/Inspired by accounts of Mark Twain contemplating suicide before his writing career took off
————
I put a pistol to my head
And as I slowly squeezed the trigger, saw
an open book on my bedside table
A trifling poem fell to my gaze, and I
paused to read, a smile caressing my lips
And I lowered the gun, finding
a moment of joy in the simplicity
of black letters on off-white page
Since that day I have read
Of pawns, and kings, deep oceans and
vaulting heavens of stars in black velvet skies
Feeling alive, and free, and a member
of the community of Humanity
All to think, that from the depths of
despair, one may find the heights of
salvation, within the pages of an open book
